What’s New?

I realize I should have been keeping this record from the beginning. Whenever I updated the main page, I would change the “What’s New” section, but I didn’t save the old information. So if someone didn’t get on the site for a month or so, they would miss some of the news highlights. I also would have liked to have a record of what I put in this section.  So, I’ll start now, and list the highlights in reverse chronological order.

Where are we?  August 16,  2002:  Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington State, USA

What's New Back in the US again, less than a week from home.

Check out photos and details of getting boarded by the Coast Guard during the passage from Hawaii. You can get to the page from here, or from the July calendar page, or from Kalen's journal page.

Where are we?  July 26,  2002:  Nanaimo, British Columbia, CANADA

What's New The weather has been glorious, and after leaving Victoria on Tuesday, July 23, we have had a couple of wonderful days motor-sailing inside the Canadian Gulf Islands. The Anchorage off Nanaimo is the most crowded we've ever seen anywhere. The first evening we ended up dropping the hook in a restricted area, but we didn't realize that it was restricted until the next morning, and we had to move. But by then, enough boats had left, that there was room for us in the non-restricted area.

Where are we?  July 16,  2002:  Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA

What's New We left Hawaii in the afternoon on June 27, about a week later than planned, due to some predictions of bad weather to the north. However, even with this delay, we didn't avoid the bad stuff completely, and ran into a nice gale about 10 days out. We realized that our multiple delays meant that when we arrived in Sitka, we would have to immediately start heading home, and basically 'hurry' to get back to Poulsbo by the time school started. There would be very little time to actually stop and explore along the Inside Passage. So we decided to turn right, and head for known waters, and arrived in our favorite city yesterday evening. We almost feel like we're home again, but we'll spend the next five or six weeks up in Victoria, then Desolation Sound, the Canadian Gulf Islands and the San Juans. We'll save the Alaska trip for some summer when we can take the whole summer for exploration.

Where are we?   June 21 2002:  Hanalei Bay, Kaua'i,  HAWAII

What's New — We left Honolulu on the evening  of June 17, after 4 weeks at the Waikiki Yacht Club dock. The original plan was to sail overnight to Kaua'i, and then spend a couple of days anchored in Hanalei Bay. We were all set to go, family and co-workers notified, and all the provisioning done, when we got the full weather routing report. It didn't look like there was any 'good' way to get to Sitka if we left on Thursday the 20th; so we're going to call the weather routing service every couple of days and wait for departure until things look better. Hanalei Bay is a beautiful place to be anchored, but there is no large grocery store to restock our provisions, no laundromat, and no internet access good enough for Kalen to do her work (e.g. no where she can plug in her own laptop).

There are some photos from Melissa's visit available here, or from the May or June calendar pages.

Where are we?   June 3, 2002:  Honolulu,  HAWAII

What's New We really like Oahu, and the Waikiki Yacht Club has been a great place to have as a base of operations. There are public busses to everywhere on the whole island!   It turns out that the sail repair that is needed is a little too much for Kalen to do with limited space and equipment, so we're going to have to send the mainsail out and wait here until it is done. We may not get to Kauai at all, but maybe we'll stop for a couple of days on our way to Alaska. Projected departure date is June16.

There are some pictures of our crew Mexico to Hawaii crew, Ben and Andre. There is a link on the bottom of the April calendar, repeated at the top of the May calendar. Nothing else has been updated since May.

Where are we?   May 9, 2002:  Lahaina, Maui, HAWAII

What's New  So, I never did get the site updated in Puerto Vallarta or Hilo. Our good friends from Poulsbo arrived two days after we got to Hawaii, and stayed with us for 2 1/2 weeks, including crossing the Aliinuihaha Channel to Maui, snorkeling at Molokini and getting to Lahaina. The day after they flew back home, Kalen flew to a conference in California, which is where this update is being posted.

Where are we?   April 18, 2002:  Hilo, HAWAII

What's New So, I never did get the site updated in Puerto Vallarta. And today is only a brief update, just to let people know we survived the passage. We departed Puerto Vallarta on Wednesday, March 26, and arrived in Hilo on Tuesday, April 16. We've got some great pictures from the passage, that will someday get posted.

Where are we?   March 12, 2002: Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit, Mexico

What's New  We left Mazatlán after 3 weeks. We had originally thought we we only stay a week or so, but it was just too nice to leave. Plus the fact that the marina rates were the almost best we'd had on the whole trip, and the marina was at a resort that left us use its pools and shuttle to town, it wasn't too hard to stay. We decided to get some boat work done there, where rates were much more reasonable than Puerto Vallarta.

We spent 3 days in the old city of San Blas, which Dan really should write a journal entry about. so I will nag him. Now we're at the Paradise Village Resort and Marina, in Nuevo Vallarta, which is just north of Puerto Vallarta. The resort is even nicer than the one in Mazatlán! This is our final stop in Mexico, and much of our time here will be spend just getting ready for the long passage to Hawaii.

Hopefully I will get the site updated with photos of Mazatlán, Isla Isabel, San Blas and Nuevo/Puerto Vallarta before we depart.

Where are we?  — February 18, 2002: Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico

What's New  We made it to Mazatlán, a few days late, because of high winds in the Gulf of California. A gale kept us stuck in a bay called Bahia de Los Muertos for four days, with 5 other boats. It's a good thing we did a lot of shopping before we left La Paz, because there are no facilities in Los Muertos... no showers, no minimart, nada. We ran out of milk and bread, but still had plenty of food and water. We finally left Los Muertos on Tuesday, February 12 and arrived in Mazatlán on Wednesday afternoon.

Kalen has a new entry on the journal page.
