Our sons have been involved in the Options program in the North Kitsap School District for 7 years. Although we homeschooled the boys for 2 of those 7 years (1997 and 1998), we never lost touch with the program and the wonderful people involved with it.
This wonderful educational experience is available for children in the 1st through 9th grades in the North Kitsap School District, Kitsap County, Washington State. Last year, Connor was in the 3rd/4th grade class, and both Brendan and Rickey were in the Junior High Options Program (JHOP), for grades 7 – 9.
The Options Program is based on the idea of strong parental involvement and integrated curriculum. In Connor’s 3rd grade class, the theme for the entire year was “Connecting With Nature” and much of the learning involved themes centered around the Natural World. Connor’s class also studied Spanish for the last two years, and it looks like Connor may be the best Spanish speaker when we get to Mexico. (That is, of course, if Melissa isn’t with us then. Melissa spent her senior year of High School in Spain, and minored in Spanish at Tulane University. )
JHOP focused for a large part of the year on “What Happened to the Salmon” in the Pacific Northwest. Their science, history and economics lessons all centered around the salmon issue, as did much of their writing and literature.
